A former family tradition in my wife's family was for each person to write down at least three things they wanted to accomplish in the new year. Those potential accomplishments were then placed in a box and sealed with candle wax for security purposes. Then at Christmas each year we would open the box and have our hopes and dreams for the year just passed read out loud for all to hear. Then as a group we would vote whether or not the person had accomplished each objective. Yes, this could be rather embarrassing at times, but it was a great deal of fun.
My "to do" list for 2011 won't go into a box this year...but it will make for interesting reading at the end of the year. This year my list will include (1) re-establishing my relationship with my son. I miss him dearly and want him to be the best person he can be. (2) Use the skills God has given me to empower more people at The Valley to take on real leadership roles in our ministry. (3) Fulfill my a commitment to physical and spiritual renewal.
I don't really see these as New Year's Resolutions but as a commitment to a better life. I'm really hoping that by the end of 2011 I will get a thumbs-up on all three. If these are the things I really want and hope for in the coming year it is up to me to make them happen. What about you? What's going in your "to do" box this year?
